Strategic Approach to Infrastructure Renewal: Cladding and Insulation Options for Police Stations

As part of the nationwide modernization program for state institutions, special attention is paid to the appearance and functionality of law enforcement buildings. A modern Ukrainian police station must not only inspire a sense of security but also meet European standards for energy efficiency and architectural aesthetics. The external finish of the building is the first step toward creating a comfortable environment for both employees and visitors.

Currently, two main methods are considered when choosing reconstruction technology. The first is the “wet” method, which involves the use of expanded polystyrene (EPS) and finish stucco. The second is the innovative ventilated facade (VF) using non-combustible mineral wool and durable metal cladding.

It should be emphasized that stucco facades with foam plastic are considered inappropriate for Ministry of Internal Affairs facilities. This is due to high fire risk (flammability class G3/G4), low resistance to mechanical damage, and the need for regular repainting. Below is a comparative characteristic clearly demonstrating the difference between these solutions.

Evaluation Criterion Stucco (Wet) Facade Mehbud Ventilated Facade
Fire Safety Flammable, toxic smoke Absolutely non-combustible (NC)
Service Life 5–7 years until cracks appear 50+ years without maintenance
Vandal Resistance Critically low High (metal 0.5–1.0 mm)
Microclimate (Moisture Removal) Low vapor permeability Maximum “breathing” effect

Why a Ventilated Facade is the Priority Choice

The transition to modern facade systems is not only a matter of aesthetics but also smart management of state assets. Analyzing the operation experience of administrative buildings, we have identified several key factors that make VF the only viable option:

  1. Economic Feasibility: Due to a high thermal resistance coefficient, the building consumes significantly less energy. Given that utility bills are paid from the state budget, the implementation of such systems pays off in the shortest possible time through energy savings.
  2. Architectural Flexibility and Recognition: The ability to use a wide palette of RAL colors and various textures allows for the creation of a unified corporate style for all police stations. This contributes to the formation of a clear visual brand for law enforcement agencies.
  3. Personnel Safety: Metal cladding systems combined with mineral wool insulation do not support combustion or spread flames. This is a critical aspect for buildings with high requirements for safety and security.
  4. Environmental Friendliness: Steel and aluminum are fully recyclable, and basalt insulation is a natural material, which aligns with global environmental standards.

The “Mehbud” factory has unique experience in manufacturing elements for facade cladding. We offer both galvanized steel with a polymer coating and long-lasting aluminum. Depending on the architectural task, cassette systems or modern facade slats can be applied.

Technical Advantages and Impact on Building Operation

The efficiency of a police station’s operation directly depends on the conditions in which the employees work. A ventilated facade acts as a “protective shield” that neutralizes negative external factors. The application of “Mehbud” technologies provides the following qualitative changes:

  1. Structural Wall Protection: The rainscreen system takes on all atmospheric loads — from direct solar radiation to heavy rain. This prevents erosion of the wall materials and eliminates the risk of mold appearing inside the premises.
  2. Thermal Stability: The air gap between the wall and the cladding creates a “thermos” effect. In summer, the building does not overheat, and in winter, it retains heat 3 times longer if the central heating is turned off.
  3. Sound Insulation Barrier: The multi-layer construction of the ventilated facade reduces external noise levels by 1.5–2 times. This creates a quiet and calm working atmosphere even in stations located along busy highways and intersections.
  4. Aesthetics for Decades: The metal’s polymer coating is resistant to UV rays and smog. The facade does not fade and does not require repainting, which eliminates annual costs for cosmetic exterior repairs.

Implementation Features: From Design to Installation

The modernization process of a state facility must be as fast and technological as possible. VF systems allow work to be carried out without stopping the operation of the police department, which is an important advantage for the continuity of service. It is worth paying attention to the following aspects of implementation:

  1. No Substrate Preparation: The ventilated facade is mounted on a steel frame, which effectively hides all irregularities, cracks, and defects of the old walls. This eliminates the need for expensive surface plastering.
  2. All-Season Installation: The technology excludes the use of water and adhesive compounds. This allows work to be performed at any time of the year, even at sub-zero temperatures, ensuring the rapid update of infrastructure.
  3. Durability and Service: The service life of the materials exceeds 50 years. The “Mehbud” factory not only supplies the products but also provides supervisor installation (chef-montage), guaranteeing quality control at every stage of the setup.
  4. Design Versatility: Thanks to a wide range of components, we can adapt the facade to any number of floors and complexity of the building’s architectural forms.

Visual Concepts: What a New Station Could Look Like

We understand that the image of the police begins with the appearance of its headquarters. When designing, “Mehbud” specialists were guided by the principles of relevance, rigor, and national identity. Below are options that can be adapted for typical police administration buildings.

Option 1. Cladding with metal cassettes in corporate colors. A strict, monolithic, and technological look. Option 2. Combined solution: a mix of cassettes and slats to create a dynamic and open image.

Option 3. Cassettes with an emphasis on the entrance group. Focus on accessibility for citizens. Option 4. Use of vertical slats to visually lighten the architectural ensemble.

New Horizons: The Concept of Transparency and Glazing

Modern global experience shows that police stations are increasingly being built using large areas of glazing. This emphasizes accountability and the proximity of law enforcement agencies to society. As part of our social media survey, the majority of respondents spoke in favor of implementing panoramic glazing elements.

The proposal to use light-transmitting structures is truly European. A glass facade symbolizes honesty and openness. Below are examples of how the integration of glass and metal can change the look of Ukrainian stations, making them part of a friendly urban space of the future.
