Exploring the market, it can be stated that the TOP golf clubs in Ukraine are formed by six leading complexes: Superior Golf & SPA Resort (Kharkiv), Kyiv Golf Club “GolfStream” (Havronshchyna), Royal Kyiv Golf Club (Makariv), Edem Golf Club (Lviv region), Equides Club (Lisnyky), and Golf Center Kyiv (Obolon, now the KSE campus). Each of these objects demonstrates a unique approach to landscape architecture, from the classic British “Links” style to the integration of golf courses into high-tech university campuses and biophilic SPA resorts. All of them are equipped with complex engineering drainage systems, professional training areas, and multifunctional clubhouses.

Evolution of golf infrastructure and landscape architecture in Ukraine

The development of golf infrastructure in Ukraine began in the late 1990s. In particular, in 1998, the first training ground (driving range) was created in the Kyiv region. However, a real architectural and engineering boom in this area occurred in the period from 2008 to 2012, when world-class golf architects began to be involved in the design of Ukrainian courses.

A modern golf complex is much more than just a sports lawn. It is a colossal engineering structure that requires moving millions of cubic meters of soil, creating artificial reservoirs, and integrating extensive underground drainage and automated irrigation systems. Agronomic and hydraulic requirements are extremely strict. For example, irrigating 1 hectare of a course by sprinkling requires about 2.9 cubic meters of water per hour. Accordingly, a 100-hectare field requires a flow rate of 300 cubic meters per hour, forcing architects to develop complex rainwater recirculation systems through cascades of lakes. In addition, the architecture of clubhouses has become a separate direction in commercial real estate design, combining recreational, hotel, restaurant, and wellness functions.

This report offers an in-depth analysis of the six most outstanding golf complexes in Ukraine, examining them through the prism of architecture, construction, design, and engineering solutions.

Detailed analysis and rating of leading golf clubs in Ukraine

1. Superior Golf & SPA Resort (Kharkiv)

Architectural profile: The complex was designed by renowned British architect John Seifert together with Ukrainian architect Serhiy Yakovlev. The official opening of the hotel took place in November 2011. The hotel building is distinguished by its modern geometry, large glazing areas, and a minimalist facade that does not distract from the main thing – the landscape.

Notable objects or projects: The total area of the complex is 69 hectares, of which 29 hectares are occupied directly by the golf course with structures. The hotel’s room stock includes 50 rooms of various categories (from Classic to Presidential Suite and villas).

Materials and technologies: The biggest achievement of the project is the earthworks. Until 2007, this area was an absolutely flat agricultural field (vegetable gardens of Pyatykhatky residents). Thanks to massive technological works, the plain was transformed into a complex 3D relief, which includes 53 sand bunkers and a system of cascading lakes.

Features of interior and exterior: The interiors of the hotel and SPA center are designed with an emphasis on natural lighting. Marble, natural wood, and high-tech moisture-resistant materials are used in the pool areas. The exterior emphasizes the status of the object through the use of premium facade systems and panoramic windows, overlooking the green fairways.

Reconstructions or modernizations: Since its opening, the complex has constantly updated its training areas and water purification systems, to meet international standards for hosting championships.

Energy-efficient and environmental solutions: A closed-loop water use cycle for technical needs and irrigation has been implemented. The SPA complex uses heat recovery systems to maintain the microclimate in humid areas with minimal heat loss.

Awards or recognition: Officially recognized as a five-star resort, the hotel has repeatedly hosted international tournaments and is included in European-level tourist maps.

Mehbud conceptual solution for Superior Golf & SPA Resort

To increase the energy efficiency of the main hotel building and update its exterior, it would be advisable to integrate a Cassette facade from the Mehbud plant. Made of galvanized steel with a polymer coating, the metal facade cassettes would provide reliable protection of the insulation from atmospheric moisture and create a premium, geometrically verified look for the building, which would perfectly harmonize with the perfectly manicured lawns of the championship course. (Note: This is a conceptual proposal, not an implemented project).

1 Superior Golf SPA

2. Kyiv Golf Club “GolfStream” (Havronshchyna, Kyiv region)

Architectural profile: The main architect of the courses was Peter Chamberlain, who adhered to the traditions of classic Scottish golf architecture, skillfully integrating playing areas into the existing natural relief.

Notable objects or projects: The total territory of the development project covers a colossal 356.18 hectares. The club has three courses, among which the 18-hole championship Chamberlain Course (length 5,914 meters) and the 9-hole park course (1,662 meters) stand out. The infrastructure also includes an Equestrian Academy with indoor and outdoor arenas.

Materials and technologies: Construction of this magnitude required grandiose engineering networks. The driving range has 35 covered platforms. Agronomic technologies involve the use of special grass mixtures resistant to trampling, with a deep drainage system that drains excess water into natural channels.

Features of interior and exterior: The Clubhouse is designed as a multifunctional space. The exterior harmonizes with park plantings, using a lot of natural stone and wood. The interior houses a restaurant, children’s rooms with a 3D cinema, and a PRO-Shop.

Mehbud conceptual solution for Kyiv Golf Club “GolfStream”

Given the vast expanses of the complex and the presence of an equestrian academy, for zoning the territory and fencing the perimeter, the Rancho fence from the Mehbud plant would be ideal. Metal sections with the texture of light or dark wood would create a feeling of openness and rustic charm (matching the equestrian theme), while ensuring anti-corrosion reliability, durability, and no need for annual painting. (Note: This is a conceptual proposal, not an implemented project).

2 GolfStream

3. Royal Kyiv Golf Club (Makariv district, Kyiv region)

Architectural profile: The course design was developed by the world-famous British architectural firm Hawtree Ltd (specifically Martin Hawtree and Caspar Grauballe), founded in 1912. Martin Hawtree is known for his work on the most prestigious courses in the world, particularly in Scotland.

Notable objects or projects: The complex includes an 18-hole championship course (par 72) and a 6-hole academic Pitch & Putt course. The total length of the first 9 holes is 3,340 meters.

Materials and technologies: Creating a “Links” style course on the mainland of Ukraine required the artificial formation of a hilly relief, typical of Scottish coasts. Complex technologies for soil stabilization and planting specific types of hard grasses, resistant to strong winds, were applied.

Features of interior and exterior: The clubhouse is designed in a classic English style that conveys restraint, aristocracy, and warmth. The interiors include a cigar room, a specialized shop, a restaurant, and meeting rooms, decorated with precious wood and leather.

Reconstructions or modernizations: Since its construction in 2008, the complex has constantly maintained turf quality standards, updating irrigation and drainage systems.

Energy-efficient and environmental solutions: Hawtree’s philosophy is the maximum organic merging of the course with the surrounding steppe/forest landscape without aggressive visual interference. Water hazards serve as natural reservoirs for collecting rainwater.

Awards or recognition: Professional community recognition and certification of courses for international championships, the possibility of obtaining an official handicap.

Mehbud conceptual solution for Royal Kyiv Golf Club

To modernize auxiliary technical structures or canopies over training areas, an appropriate solution would be a Rack facade manufactured by Mehbud. Clear vertical or horizontal lines of metal racks would create an expressive contrast with the natural hills of the “Links” style course. In addition, such a facade provides excellent ventilation of the structures, which is critical for storing equipment and golf carts. (Note: This is a conceptual proposal, and not an implemented project).

3 Royal Kyiv Golf Club

4. Edem Golf Club (Strilky village, Lviv region)

Architectural profile: Edem Resort Medical & SPA was designed as a closed recreational ecosystem. The architecture of the complex is based on the principles of harmony with nature, minimizing interference with the forest landscape, and maximizing the use of the coastline of its own lake.

Notable objects or projects: There is a 9-hole academic golf course and a large driving range of about 5 hectares on the territory. The infrastructure includes high-class groups of cottages, a medical center, Edem Forest SPA, and restaurant complexes.

Materials and technologies: Natural materials prevail in the construction of cottages and club buildings: stone, natural wood, and glass. The driving range is equipped with modern chipping and putting greens with special sand bunkers requiring a special drainage layer.

Features of interior and exterior: The interiors of rooms and suites (from 17 to 33 sq. m and more) are created using soft hypoallergenic materials. Panoramic glazing blurs the boundaries between the interior space and the forest landscape. The exterior of the buildings organically “hides” behind the crowns of trees.

Reconstructions or modernizations: The complex is constantly expanding its functionality, adding new recreation areas (for example, Edem Forest SPA) and updating training bases for playing golf.

Energy-efficient and environmental solutions: The resort operates with a focus on sustainability. Restaurants function on a farm-to-table principle, using local products from their own gardens. Engineering systems provide energy-efficient climate control and water purification without the use of harsh chemicals.

Awards or recognition: Recognized as one of the best Medical SPA resorts in Europe; the golf club has the status of the main center for the development of this sport in Western Ukraine.

Information sources: edemresort.com, specialized tourist portals.

Mehbud conceptual solution for Edem Golf Club

For the design of open summer terraces near the lake or canopies over the golf club’s training zones, a perfect choice would be a Cube-shaped ceiling in wood texture. This architectural element from Mehbud provides a stunning 3D effect and visually continues the forest theme (biophilic design). At the same time, unlike natural wood, metal racks have 100% moisture resistance, are not affected by fungi due to evaporation from the lake, and guarantee absolute fire safety. (Note: This is a conceptual proposal, not an implemented project).

4 Edem Golf Club

5. Equides Club (Lisnyky village, Kyiv region)

Architectural profile: Located on 16 hectares of picturesque hills, Equides Club conceptually combines equestrian arenas, a hotel complex, and golf courses into a single architectural ensemble in a modern style.

Notable objects or projects: Lisnyky Golf Club is integrated into the overall infrastructure, which also includes Equides Villas (premium villas), a large SPA center, indoor and outdoor pools, as well as paddle tennis courts.

Materials and technologies: The construction of villas and hotel buildings was carried out using modern monolithic frame technologies with half-timbered elements. In the SPA area, complex waterproofing and ventilation systems are used to maintain the microclimate in pools and hammams.

Features of interior and exterior: The interiors are spacious, with mansard windows in some rooms, and fireplaces in the villas. The exterior complements the landscape: the buildings are not high-rise, which preserves the dominant role of forest hills and green fields.

Reconstructions or modernizations: The club is actively developing; in particular, the construction of new premium-class villas, the expansion of children’s spaces and active recreation areas are currently underway.

Energy-efficient and environmental solutions: The territory is designed in such a way as to minimize car traffic near recreation and play areas. There are charging stations for electric vehicles. Irrigation of the fields is carried out taking into account the local relief and the preservation of green spaces.

Awards or recognition: The complex is positioned as a 5-star park hotel and has received high ratings (over 9.0) on international booking platforms.

Information sources: equides.com.ua, tourist review aggregators, official press releases.

Mehbud conceptual solution for Equides Club

In order to ensure maximum privacy for the residents of the new Equides Villas, the optimal solution could be a metal Blinds fence. This modern enclosing structure from the Mehbud plant has a unique property: it completely blocks the view of the site from the street, but allows residents to freely see the surrounding forest landscape from the inside. In addition, the blinds lamellas provide free air circulation, which is extremely important for maintaining a healthy microclimate in areas densely planted with trees. (Note: This is a conceptual proposal, not an implemented project).

5 Equides Club

6. Golf Center Kyiv (Kyiv, Obolon) / KSE Campus

Architectural profile: Historically, this was the first capital golf center built on 6 hectares of the Natalka tract. The landscape was distinguished by a relict oak grove and picturesque relief drops near the Dnipro River.

Notable objects or projects: The initial infrastructure included a 6-hole course and a two-story driving range with 35-38 spots, as well as commercial areas (a class B+ business center with an area of 4000 sq. m).

Materials and technologies: The original buildings were erected using large arrays of glazing and steel structures, which provided insolation for office premises and training halls.

Features of interior and exterior: In April 2025, the complex entered a new era. The Kyiv School of Economics (KSE) purchased the golf club for $18 million. The interiors and exteriors will be completely rethought within a budget of $40 million. The buildings are being adapted for classrooms, laboratories for engineers, mathematicians, and urbanists, as well as R&D centers.

Reconstructions or modernizations: The “Harvard on Obolon” concept involves creating an open space. KSE President Tymofiy Mylovanov announced the dismantling of fences, opening the territory to the community, preserving the golf infrastructure, restoring the summer cinema, and setting up academic rowing.

Energy-efficient and environmental solutions: The modernization involves the introduction of modern energy-saving technologies for the campus, the integration of green zones into the educational process, and a complete rejection of car traffic inside the park zone (creation of a barrier-free eco-space).

Awards or recognition: The purchase of the facility became the largest private investment in education in the entire history of independent Ukraine.

Information sources: Official KSE press releases, Forbes Ukraine, Ekonomichna Pravda.

Mehbud conceptual solution for Golf Center Kyiv (KSE)

In the process of reconstructing buildings into high-tech research laboratories and classrooms of the KSE campus, a Rack ceiling manufactured by Mehbud would become an indispensable architectural element. In addition to creating an aesthetic, strict, and modern design, the metal racks would allow neatly hiding highly complex engineering communications (modern ventilation, and air conditioning systems, electrical wiring for servers, and integrated LED lighting). Also, such ceilings meet the highest fire safety standards, which is a critical requirement for educational institutions. (Note: This is a conceptual proposal, not an implemented project).

Engineering systems and agronomic innovations in Ukrainian golf construction

Creating a golf course is a discipline, that lies at the intersection of architecture, hydrology, and agronomy. Having analyzed the best projects in Ukraine, several key technological trends can be identified.

Drainage and water conservation

Rain and groundwater are both a resource and a threat to golf courses. Modern water management systems operate on a collection and recirculation principle. Special drainage tunnels and cassettes are mounted under the fairways and greens, which prevent soil subsidence and drain excess moisture. The collected water is directed to artificial lakes, which serve as reservoirs for powerful pumping stations capable of supplying hundreds of cubic meters of water per hour for irrigation. Compliance of water quality with state standards (DSTU 2730-94) is constantly monitored to prevent irrigational soil salinization.

Agronomic standards

Landscape design of golf courses requires the selection of specific grasses that can withstand extremely low mowing. For example, grass height on greens is maintained at just 4 millimeters. For the Ukrainian climate, architects most often use seed mixtures of red fescue (Festuca rubra) and Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) of various breeding varieties (up to 50% of the mixture). This provides density, rapid recovery after club damage (divots), and a flawless uniform color of the turf.

Key takeaways

  1. Multifunctionality as a standard: None of the leading golf clubs in Ukraine functions exclusively as a sports facility. They have transformed into complex development projects, combining elite real estate (villas), medical tourism (SPA resorts), and high-class hotel and restaurant infrastructure.
  2. Educational revolution in commercial real estate: The acquisition of the Kyiv Golf Center by the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE) for $18 million is an unprecedented step in the Ukrainian real estate market. The transformation of a closed elite club into an open university campus testifies to a change in social priorities and architectural paradigms in urban space planning.
  3. Ecology and sustainability: Golf courses are no longer “destroyers” of ecosystems. On the contrary, modern complexes, such as GolfStream or Edem Resort, preserve local forests, clean rivers, and implement closed water use cycles.
  4. Choice of materials: In conditions of high humidity (huge irrigation areas, artificial lakes, SPA pools), architects and builders are gradually abandoning short-lived materials in favor of modern metal structures. Facade and ceiling systems made of galvanized steel and aluminum are becoming the gold standard for club infrastructure buildings due to their durability, fire safety, and aesthetic flexibility.
